While Angola continues to languish near the bottom of every corruption rating, and most of its people continue to struggle with extremely low standards of living and lack of basic freedoms, the European and American owners of the Lobito Corridor are going to play golf in Luanda next week. There, they will discuss in greater depth for the umpteenth time how they will wonderfully export critical resources from the DRC through the Lobito Corridor for the next 50 years.

The speakers list will be wonderful - the best there is. All the best possible representatives of the USA, who do not find it difficult to shake hands with people who sell their country and everything it has for a few dollars while keeping their people in fear. There will be representatives from the US government, and from all the companies involved in the Lobito Corridor. Spoiler alert - none of them are African.

And as a little aside, the company Trafigura, which has corruption and bribery of state cases across half the planet (also the company that illegally dumped a shipload of toxic waste in Cote d'Ivoire in 2006, poisoning 26,000 Ivorians), is one of the companies participating in the project. It was most recently convicted in Switzerland over yet another bribery scandal in Angola, and what has changed? You guessed it - absolutely nothing. The company still manages the project...
